Freshwater Salinization: Saltier Rivers Are a Growing Concern
Streams suffering from salinization often have degraded communities of fish and invertebrates with lower biodiversity where only pollution-tolerant species can survive. This negatively impacts the whole aquatic ecosystem.

The National Capital Inventory & Monitoring Network of the NPS has been partnering with the Stroud Water Research Center through the CW CESU to develop data quality controls, update monitoring protocols, and analyze water quality data in NCRO parks. Freshwater salinization has been identified as a growing threat to aquatic life in streams of the National Capital Region parks.
