Segregated Black High Schools NHL Research Internship (NPS)

The National Historic Landmarks (NHL) Program seeks an intern to support a historic context study of secondary schools for Black students during racial segregation in public education. The proposed historical context will assist the NHL program in evaluating the historical significance of these schools and in assessing the eligibility of individual schools for potential NHL designation. Specific research tasks will be defined in consultation with the successful applicant and could include:

  • Compiling an annotated bibliography of relevant primary and secondary sources.
  • Preparing a chronology of events and legislation that influenced the development of high schools for Black students.
  • Identifying extant all-Black high schools that operated in the Jim Crow states before desegregation.
  • Researching individual schools.
  • Writing a component of the historical context.

The intern will also support NHL historians with other tasks related to the operation of the NHL program:

  • Responding to letters of inquiry regarding the potential for NHL designation.
  • Updating and revising existing nominations.
  • Preparing documentation for withdrawal of NHL designation.
  • Developing social media content to promote the NHL program.

Through this internship, the student will learn about the NHL program and gain experience defining and developing a historical context and evaluating eligibility for historic designation.

The position is remote work eligible and includes a housing allowance of $1000. Research travel may be required, and those expenses will be reimbursed.
